<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Major
records label and independent records labels are the most common topic in music
industry. Currently, there are three major labels that are acknowledge
worldwide and often referred as the ‘Big Three’; Universal Music Group, Sony
Music Entertainment and Warner Music Group. According to the statement above,
the rest of the records labels in the world should be counted as independent
records label.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; margin-left: 1.0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">What makes
them different, the major and the independent? Usually, the major records
labels have the larger scale of business and distribution networks, also the
larger budget. On the downside, it’s often said that major records label hold
more control power of their artists. Meanwhile, the independent records labels
are often assumed as the more freedom-giver to their artists, with less creative
control over the artists’ works and more lenient contracts. And on the
downside, independent records labels often associated with the lacks of
distribution networks and funds. But, were that sufficient enough to explain
the differences? I feel there’s more left to be unfold as there are still lots
of grey area in this matter.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">On this
paper, I’d like to take a comparison between two companies; <b>Universal Music Group (UMG)</b> as the

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Based on what I’ve been explaining
above, the distinctive differences between UMG and SM are the artist signing
system and the distribution system. If the UMG relies on its records labels as
the feeder, SM relies on its audition and academy program to sign the artist.
On the distribution system, UMG has their own company that manages the
distribution of its assets while SM has to rely on their deals with other
distributions companies outside South Korea.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And with this paper, I’d also like
to erase the mainstream ideas that make the major label became the evil side
that take full control of their artist, while the independent records label,
like SM, even has the artists tied up with the long-term contract. And about
the funds and budgets, SM might needs some distribution channel to distribute
their products but that doesn’t mean they are lacking in money. In its
progression, SM even built the kingdom by having some subsidiaries.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

music business student in School of Audio Engineering (SAE) Jakarta. But, let
me write a little bit about myself for a starter. Before I even entered the
college life again, I already had this dream about starting an entertainment
company in the future, a company that will produce and manage the next
generation artists and musicians. With my past experiences as a DJ, a band
member and an event organizer, also with the knowledge that I retained from
that plus some from the world wide web, I lead myself to believe that I will
grasp my dream later on, after I finished this music business study and got in
touch with several people that matter in this industry. And as I stated in the
first line of this journal, I’ve passed my first week in my music business
study. Now, I successfully trashed that dream aside.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-indent: 36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">If I put it in a softer way, I packed
my dream up and stored it in a room with no guarantee when it will be
re-opened. That was some cocky dream I had, and now I feel that I’m being
knocked down to my senses. My experiences aren’t sufficient enough and my
knowledge is quite shallow, it’s going to be a disaster if I keep moving
towards that dream in my current state.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-indent: 36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">First, I had ‘Music and Multimedia’
class with Ziad Sofyan a.k.a. <i>Emenk</i>. Even
though he’s working as graphic designer, and this class is mainly about the multimedia,
he said one important thing that caught my most attention, it’s about shaping
and branding myself or the identity I wish to present in the future. The second
class was ‘Music Industry’ with Aldo Sianturi, the very first discussion that
this class had is about music history. I regard that knowing history as the
important thing in everything because it helps to understand the current matter
better. Well, it’s a tricky thing to retrace something back, but it’s indeed
needed. And the last class was “Audio and Live Sound” with Asmoro Jati. Between
the three classes, I thought that this class had more direct approach to
reality. Basically, this class was the main reason why I decided to toss my
dream aside. I came to realize the fact that I didn’t know the real music industry
and all this time I just barely scratching its surface.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0cm; text-align: justify; text-indent: 36.0pt; text-justify: inter-ideograph;">
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">I’m not stating that all the classes
killed my dream, instead they made me realize that I was too proud with my unprepared
self. So that’s why I tossed it aside and try to focus my attention to what
these classes have to offer for me. Maybe, I’ll find my way to relive my dream
someday. Or maybe, I’ll find my way to a bigger thing. I’ll let the future
speaks for itself later.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

It’s not a state of consciousness. The term state will imply change, but turiya never changes or evolves to something else. Yes, I’m talking about “Turiya”. Turiya is a title of a book, written by Maradilla Syachridar. Who is Maradilla Syachridar? But still, a cover holds an important role. A book’s cover is like a window, or even a gate, perhaps. We need to see or go through it to see what lies beneath it. Judging by Turiya’s cover, what do you see? Is it a book about wine? Why the picture is being turned upside down? Why it has three hands hold a glass of wine each? What are they toasting about?</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:0cm;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align: justify;text-justify:inter-ideograph;line-height:normal"><span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language:EN-GB">Well, you can ask lots of questions based on a cover. The book pictured a distorted figure of reality that revolves around me.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>It may sounds like an exaggeration, but that’s the way I feel. Somehow I can relate to the characters feelings and emotions. Ou, yeah.. It was Sunday, February 20, 2011. I came to Eastern Promise, an Irish Pub with stage on their backyard, that located in Kemang area, Jakarta. Morfem has a release party for their first album with big title, 'Indonesia'.</span></div><div style="text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNjGkmhmvShvczOVRa8egEyUhLYCkcWbOBW8ttoTeoIw80Ex41syFTjqzZXaDJpMXstJKSu_YUQ1IWZPVWyOL8yeqz5VeikXobPnb6TIjExUzCK8E-v1VK8uO7yFxjUBCz0xE7AvNhLvDI/s320/morfem+release.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 182px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578864311969931170" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">A little information, Morfem is a side-project rock band with personnels from different bands - correction, amazing bands. Jimi Multhazam as vocalist comes from The Upstairs, Pandu Fathoni as guitarist comes from The Porno, Bramasta Juan Sasongko as bassist comes from JARB and Freddie Alexander Warnerin as drummer comes from Nervous Breakdown.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">But I'm not writing this post as a review of Morfem's Indonesia Release Party. All I can say it was a great show, I guess hundreds of people filled Eastern Promise. It really was packed. Morfem brought more than 10 songs beautifully, their own and some cover songs. Their act on stage were just simply amazing. More about Morfem, you could follow their twitter account <a href="http://twitter.com/morfem_band">here</a>, or see Jimi's blog <a href="http://jimimulthazam.wordpress.com/">here</a>.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">And before Morfem came up to the stage, there were to two bands that perform to open their show. They were Suri and PAL/NTSC. Well, I'm not going to talk about Suri either. So, this post is about PAL/NTSC.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">Formed by two dearest friend of mine in February 2010, PAL/NTSC is becoming (I might say) one of my favorite band in Indonesia. WIth their unique genre that they call 'electronic dub wonton andalusian boots', in short they are an unique rock band with a touch of electronic sounds in some of their songs.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqrWHxnEkcsqxmaE3A6ToKlEDZnS2fjhyTGpfSEvtPE5vb9r-so1L3NzVxvWMH0QOw_T0557KyJmN7kFMO3D5_p_dk_Zxqu0yx34yl4Or2Lz_JA0gUzqA6bVLZ7l0F9j0HQ2w_W5qty44f/s320/pal1.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578865034118101346" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">PAL/NTSC member consists of Muhammad Pandu on bass and vocal, Louie Drayden on guitar and synths, Sabri on guitar and Risky on drums. Just a little trivia, Sabri and Risky are brothers by blood.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">Beside Pandu's somewhat-cutting-edge-crazy style and act on stage, the eye-catching point of PAL/NTSC is Louie. That guy refuses to let his face out in the open, so he wear some kind of modified helmet to cover, not just his face, but his entire head. And that's why all the photographers that tried to catch their performance on stage tend to choose to take more photos of Louie. Poor you, the other members.. :p</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX9iHVIy9-F-5ibR45uFzfdRPwNbALjtX_fCFC_AJfl5RaMrBlCwpO9NLg9F4kNTYQxj4mEsOM3RFZ6KogbqL3byw58JbNgwkUj_IV8hci3idaQwF5Qw3wAZGXTLuMaYRAICKwzAQDbBhr/s320/IMG_3310.JPG" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5578865038098469954" /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">In Morfem's Indonesia Release Party, PAL/NTSC brought 6 songs on. They were all their own songs. Their songs list in order was: </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">1) Multicultural Thieves </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">2) Cotton Buds</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">3) Even I'm Offended By This</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">4) Survival Of The Fattest (Upbeat Version)</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">5) United</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">6) Louie Multicultural Offended Manual Dub</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">Way before they opened for Morfem, PAL/NTSC has performed in several occasions, including Terusik Traxkustik. Terusik Traxkustik is a monthly event from one of the biggest radio in Jakarta, Trax 101.4 FM.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">Are you interested in PAL/NTSC?? They are Indonesian band that come from Bandung, West Java. The band member was Dina Dellyana, Grahadea Kusuf and Risa Saraswati.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">I love their kind of music since their first album, 'Epic Symphony' in 2004. Which followed by much darker and melancholy one, 'Echoes of the Universe' in 2006 - which I love too, even some songs lead to suicidal thoughts.. :p</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">In 2010, they launched their third album, 'Let A Thousand Flowers Bloom'. In this album, Risa Saraswati's voice is no longer fill the songs. And one of my favorite singer, Amandia Syachridar, replace her spot. It doesn't mean that I don't love Risa's voice, it's just I like Amandia since before she's joining Homogenic - read <a href="http://fadilpinandita.blogspot.com/2011/01/day-16-amandia-syachridar.html">here</a> for details. I still listen to Risa's voice in her new band called Sarasvati, love their music also.</span></div></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">So, I've written this over and over before. I've been given the opportunities, which I value the most, to remix some of Homogenic songs. Cut to the chase, I've been working to re-mix 2 of their songs. 'Destiny' were transformed in to Trance tunes under Astral Escalation and 'Sampai Jumpa' were turned to Drum & Bass/Jungle by Jastria & Fadil.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span">I want to thank <a href="http://twitter.com/dinadellyana">Dina Dellyana</a> for the most valuable opportunity in my life. <a href="http://twitter.com/grahadea">Grahadea Kusuf</a> for sending all the files and the suggestions. No matter how hard, no matter how long. Sometimes, we may stumble down and fall. Even when we fall, don't let our head down. Keep it up, keep stare at our goal(s). Pick ourselves up and try again. That's what we should do.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; ">But, every person has his/her own limitations. There are times that we meet a wall, too high to be climbed, to think to be brought down. When we already tried, and feels like we can't, ask for help. I'm sure our friends will lend their hands, and we need to reach out our own hands to be able grasp theirs.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >Ask for help is not a sign of weakness. I am now into electronic music. And I am starting to know certain bands that even their names I haven't even heard before, either they're local or international bands or even certain individuals that bring this musical genre in their backs. If you were following my previous entries, you may notice that I've mentioned Homogenic in an awful lot of times. But I can't help it. They're my favorite local electronic band for a couple years back.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >But, it's not them who catch my ears for the first time. And it's not even my comrades from Aonyx that introduced me to this genre, but I still got a lot of references from them. It was a band called <b>Media Distorsi</b>. An Indonesian band, that opened my eyes and showed me the existence of this music genre. At that time I was still playing rock-star with my school band and just listening to those mainstream musics.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >It was only one song that I have heard from Media Distorsi, it often repeating on and on in my head. The song called "<i><b>Confession Part 2</b></i>". I really love the song, even until now. Back then, I only like to hear the song. Never scratched in my mind that I want to see them live. But now, I truly regretted it. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; ">Nowadays, I barely heard the name Media Distorsi again. Maybe just one of their personnel, that known as Indra7. And now is known as one of the DJ of Microchip. </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; ">Well, I still do hope that someday, it will come the time that they decide to perform live again. I'll be trying my best to be there and thanks them in person.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms'; "><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >Click <a href="http://www.myspace.com/mediadistorsi">here</a> to visit their myspace page. They haven't been online since August 2009, but you can still listen to some of their songs. Once again, thank you, Media Distorsi. :)</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkjIpF5Q3XM9KWwJChMH58vcQnYchguhhHlDviHZb2AKfqkoWwaMPp465l3hq3hXa87UzIGINZ8-Q136hnsyGsyXo8a6rEUHdZ3iIH_SQmc2qfRVNUImoRWJxOAcuZgh9YQ_9qAeARq1c5/s320/media+distorsi.jpg" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5564526464767478770" /></span></div>Fadil Pinanditahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01804051672622398769noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4150854384373135080.post-57684819369220591692011-01-20T03:38:00.003+07:002011-01-20T18:10:48.263+07:00Day #20: Love What You Do, Do What You Love<span class="Apple-style-span" >"<i>Love What You Do, Do What You Love</i>"</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >A simple statement, really. I don't know who started it first, but for me, the words above reached deep within.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >I often found my mind wandered, even to the most absurd place, when I am alone. And I recall, it's been more than once that I thought of "what's the point of doing something you don't love?". That's why I often ask, "what's your dream?". If I haven't asked you that question, then I have not chatted with you long enough to ask that. The point of asking that question is for my selfish curiosity to know what have you done to reach what you love.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >I live my life the way I want. I even choose 'Trance Music' in my theme for thesis, while I am studying in architecture (LoL). We'll see how it goes. Haha.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >So, I can (proudly) say it (now), I LOVE WHAT I DO AND I DO WHAT I LOVE! When we can easily hear our favorite song from our own mp3 player? Well, I do need the radio.</span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >To be honest, I am a quite apathetic person, I rarely give a damn to what happen in the world if it doesn't have anything to do with me. I don't watch the news or read the newspaper, even if I am, I only watch or read the sports news. Ou yea, there's twitter now. I can easily know what is happening, but it doesn't mean that I read all the updates.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >To be honest (part 2), I only hear the local radio when I am in my car. But in average work-day, I spent about a quarter of it in my car (yea, I am restless.. :p). So, it is a quite lots of time to listen to the radio. And sometimes, in my own home, when the internet connection is good, I listen to online radio.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" ><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >What can I get from the radio?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" >Beside some news that being brought with a-certain-funny-way from the broadcasters, listen to the radio also gives me updates in music.
